About us
The Peter Mac Volunteer Service is embracing change and growing in the diversity of the services which it offers patients. The volunteer team is also growing as secondary students, university students, professionals, individuals from the community, community groups, small and large companies, and corporations step forward to support our patients at Peter Mac in a myriad of ways, all of which are much appreciated and definitely contribute to the compassion and care which we strive for in supporting our patients.

Through both the Patient Support Program and the Outreach Service, hospital volunteers fulfill a wide range of roles for Peter Mac inpatients and outpatients attending the East Melbourne, Moorabbin and Box Hill campuses of Peter Mac.

Each volunteer is a compassionate person who has been carefully selected for her/his ability to respond to another person's needs. Most of the volunteers have had an association with cancer. Some have been patients themselves. The volunteers bring significant experience, abilities and life skills to the task of offering support to others.

On commencement at Peter Mac volunteers attend an induction and orientation training program. Continuing education is undertaken throughout each year to ensure a high quality volunteer Service.

The Peter Mac Volunteer Service continues to expand the number of services and products it provides for patients. There are now twenty-six services and eight products. These include the convenience trolley; hairdressing, manicures and massages for patients; the headwear service; wig library; ‘Look Good Feel Better’ program.

Secondary and tertiary students now volunteer and are encouraged by their educational facilities to do so. Engagement with students is important and we have a social and moral responsibility to provide fulfilling volunteer roles for these young people, to encourage and nurture them as part of our future workforces and communities.

We have engaged with the corporate sector and are developing long term sustainable partnerships that support shared values and goals and provide measurable outcomes in corporate social responsibility.
