Urological cancer is cancer that affects the bladder, kidney, prostate, testicles or penis

Bladder cancer
Nearly all cancers of the bladder begin in the lining of the bladder and are called Transitional Cell Cancers. They come in a wide range of forms and can behave in very different ways. Transitional cell cancers grow from the inside lining of the bladder, they are either superficial (only affecting the lining of the bladder) or invasive (have spread into the wall of the bladder) cancers.

Kidney Cancer
This cancer can be divided into cancer arising from the kidney cells which is called Renal Cell Carcinoma (more common), or cancer arising from the ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder) called Transitional Cell Carcinoma. There are rarer kidney cancers such as sarcomas. It is important to know the type of cancer you have, as the way it is treated is often different.

Prostate Cancer
This cancer is a major health issue in Australia and is the most common cancer in men. In many cases, there are no symptoms when the cancer is diagnosed. Some men experience urinary symptoms such as:
  • needing to urinate more often, especially at night
  • difficulty holding back the flow of urine
  • difficulty starting and stopping the flow of urine
  • dribbling of urine
  • poor urine flow or a flow that stops and starts.

Testicular Cancer
This cancer arises from male testicles, which are part of the reproductive system. Most often testicular cancer appears as a lump involving the testicles. There are two main forms of testicular cancer; seminomas (which contain one type of cancer cell) and non-seminomas (which are made up of different types of cancer cells grouped together).

Other Urological Cancers
There are a number of rare cancers involving the urological system. These cancers include those of the penis, urethra (a tube through which you pass urine) and ureter. As Peter Mac is the largest cancer centre in Australia and New Zealand, we have developed relative expertise in these rare malignancies.
