Selection of Radiation Oncology Trainees in Victoria

Training in Radiation Oncology is conducted under the auspices of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) and consists of a total of five years of supervised training in a suitably accredited radiation oncology department. Various examinations and other assessments must be completed as set out in the 2009 RANZCR Curriculum and Handbook, available on the RANZCR website – www.ranzcr.edu.au.

There are currently four departments within Victoria accredited for training in radiation oncology:

1. The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (East Melbourne, Bendigo, Box Hill and Moorabbin)
2. The William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre (Prahran and Traralgon)
3. The Andrew Love Cancer Centre (Geelong)
4. Austin Health (Ballarat and Heidelberg)

Each training department has a designated Director of Training (DOT) for Radiation Oncology, who is responsible for all aspects of registrar training at that site. The current DOTs at Peter Mac are Dr Sarat Chander and Dr Chen Liu. See foot of page for contact details.

To be eligible to undertake radiation oncology training, applicants must have a medical degree, registrable in Victoria, and must have completed two years as a Hospital Medical Officer. Since 2003, the four radiation oncology departments accredited for training in Victoria participate in a single interview process when selecting trainees.

Applicants are required to complete an application form, and to provide an up-to-date copy of their curriculum vitae (with referees), transcript of undergraduate medical school results and a copy of medical registration certificate.

The applicants will be judged on the following criteria.

• Motivation to train in radiation oncology;
• Academic record, including undergraduate performance;
• Clinical abilities;
• Work habits and personal qualities as judged by referees;
• Interest in research, including past performance and current projects;
• Communication skills, including sense of ethics and compassion;
• Confidence and self-esteem;
• Willingness to accept rotations between all Victorian training centres.

Applicants selected for appointment will then complete the usual employment procedures with their initial employing hospital, with most initial contracts of employment being for a one-year period only. Subject to receiving a satisfactory assessment of progress each year, trainees can complete their accredited training in Victoria or may choose to arrange to do some of their training outside Victoria. Some rotation between training centres in Victoria over the course of the training program is to be expected.
