| As a patient of Peter Mac, you will have contact with a pharmacist at various stages of your journey with us. Pharmacists work in the wards and in the dispensary areas to provide chemotherapy and other medicines used in the treatment of cancer. Peter Mac’s pharmacists will work with you and the other members of your healthcare team to make sure that the medicines you are prescribed here are the best treatment for your condition. | ||||||

| Medication Supply | ||||||
| When your doctor writes a prescription for you at Peter Mac, the pharmacy supplies those medications for you. If you have medications prescribed as an Outpatient at Peter Mac East Melbourne you can have your prescription dispensed by the pharmacy located on the upper ground level. The pharmacy works hard to minimise your waiting time for your prescriptions. If you need to have a repeat prescription dispensed between visits to the doctor, we can hold your repeat prescription on file, and you can telephone a few days before you need the medicines and we will prepare your prescription either to be posted to you (charges apply) or ready for you to drop in and pick up. Remember to let us know if your address or concession status have changed since we saw you last. | ||||||
| Ward Pharmacists | ||||||
| Pharmacists are attached to each of the wards at Peter Mac. If you are an inpatient, a pharmacist who will ask you a series of questions about your usual medicines, any allergies that you may have to medicines and any problems you have had with medicines in the past. During your stay, the ward pharmacist will check your medication chart each day, and work with the doctors and nurses to ensure that your medicines are available, and are safe to use together. Before you go home, the ward pharmacist will make sure you have all the medicines you need at home and understand how and when to take them. There are also pharmacists attached to the Chemotherapy Day Ward, who play a special role in providing chemotherapy to our day patients. Our specialist palliative care pharmacist also sees patients in the pain and palliative care clinic to discuss and provide information about pain and other medications. | ||||||
| Medicines Information | ||||||
| All the pharmacists here at Peter Mac are focused on medicines used to treat cancer. You may ask your ward pharmacist or the pharmacists in the dispensary any questions you may have about your medicines. The pharmacy can provide written information about any medicine you have been prescribed. We can also provide a summary sheet for you that will list your medicines, when to take them and some simple reminders about what to watch out for. | ||||||
| Other Pharmacy Services | ||||||
| The pharmacy also has a specialised Drug Information Service that helps doctors and other health care workers with specific, often complex, questions about cancer medicines. Pharmacists and trained pharmacy technicians, as well as support staff work to ensure medicines are available when they are needed, prepare chemotherapy in a form that can safely be administered to patients, and help to ensure safe and effective medicines use. The Peter Mac pharmacy provides support by way of clinical placements and education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in training and other healthcare professionals particularly in the area of cancer medicines. | ||||||
| Fees and Charges | ||||||
| While you are an inpatient at Peter Mac, pharmacy will supply medicines used during your stay free of charge. Medicines that are taken home with you will be dispensed by our pharmacists and usually delivered to you in the ward area. The medicines you take home from here may incur a patient contribution charge in line with the Commonwealth and Victorian Government guidelines. In order to determine the appropriate charges we may ask for your Medicare or other Government concession, Veterans or safety net cards. From 1 January 2009 the co-payments for PBS listed items have been set as follows: | ||||||
