Our services
Computed Tomography (CT) Scans
We perform over 20 CT examinations per day, consisting predominantly of whole-body staging (chest, abdomen, pelvis, often including neck).

CT-guided biopsies and drainages are performed with the use of a CT fluoroscopy system, allowing higher accuracy and improved targeting of difficult lesions, for example, lung masses and deep organ lesions.

Other specialised facilities include CT colonography (“virtual colonoscopy”), CT angiography and 3-D reconstruction.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scans
The MRI casemix at Peter Mac is a mixture of outpatient referrals (e.g. brain and spine imaging) and dedicated oncology examinations which include:
  • Cranial nerve and skull base imaging
  • Local staging of head and neck malignancy
  • Local staging of cervical, rectal and prostate malignancies
  • Prostate spectroscopy
  • Breast MRI
  • Oncological brain, spine, abdominal and musculoskeletal studies

Digital Mammography
The Diagnostic Imaging Department at Peter Mac installed the first digital mammographic unit in Australia in April 2004. Advantages of digital mammography include improved imaging of dense breast tissue, the ability to retrieve “soft copy” images from the digital workstation and decreased hook wire localisation time.

We perform diagnostic mammography for a wide patient population, including high-risk patients with strong family history of breast carcinoma and postoperative patients who have had previous carcinoma or DCIS; in addition to initial diagnostic workup.

Ultrasound
The ultrasound casemix at Peter Mac has an oncologic emphasis. The most common examinations include breast, abdominal and small parts imaging. Diagnostic procedures form a large component of the ultrasound casemix, including:
  • Core biopsy (e.g. breast, abdominal, small parts)
  • Fine needle aspiration – in particular, head and neck nodes, difficult lesions
  • Breast hookwire localisation
  • Pleural and ascites aspiration
  • Abscess drainage

Interventional Radiology
The angiographic machine provides on-table CT capability. The range of interventional procedures performed includes:
  • Central venous access – Arrowcath, Vascath and PICC line insertion
  • Barium and contrast studies
  • Percutaneous nephrostomy and biliary drainage
  • Percutaneous gastrostomy (PEG) tube insertion
  • IVC filter insertion
  • Catheter placement for isolated limb infusion procedures
  • General fluoroscopic procedures, e.g. difficult lumbar punctures and nasogastric tubes performed under fluoroscopic guidance
