| Inpatients are people who are booked for overnight stays at Peter Mac. As a new inpatient, when you arrive at Peter Mac go to the Admissions and Registration . Once you are registered, you will be escorted to your ward. Peter Mac has four inpatient wards and an Intensive Care Unit. All of the wards have a dayroom with tea and coffee making facilities where you can relax away from your bed and catch up with family and friends. Wards are generally made up of rooms of four beds with shared bathroom facilities. There are a limited number of single (private) rooms available. These are allocated according to medical need. During your inpatient stay, you will meet a range of Peter Mac staff such as doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists, as well as patient service assistants. Peter Mac staff aim to be friendly, compassionate and ready help make your time at Peter Mac as comfortable as possible. Many of them have specialist cancer training and are happy to answer your questions and provide any information you need. Occasionally you may see a room that has a strict no entry sign and a shield across the door. These rooms are for patients undergoing specialised treatment and cannot be entered other than by authorised staff. More information on being an inpatient at Peter Mac is available in the Patient Guide: East Melbourne. | ||||||

| Ward 2 | ||||||
| Ward 2 is on level 2 and is our haematology (blood cancer) ward. It has 23 beds. As haematological patients are often prone to developing infections, there are strict infection control policies in place for this ward. You will find that all nurses and medical staff wear gloves and gowns when in contact with patients and there is a higher ratio of nurses to patients (1:3). All patients and visitors must wash their hands with the solution provided prior to entering the wards. No flowers or plants are allowed into the ward. | ||||||
| Ward 3 | ||||||
| Ward 3 (level 3 ) is our surgical ward with 23 beds for use by patients after surgery. | ||||||
| Ward 7 | ||||||
| Ward 7 (level 7) and is our Head and Neck, and Lung cancer ward, again with 23 beds. | ||||||
| Ward 9 | ||||||
| Ward 9 (level 9) is our adolescent and young adult ward, as well as inpatient chemotherapy ward. It has 19 beds and the Matt Welsh room – a break-out area where our younger patients can relax, watch TV, or just chill out. | ||||||
| Intensive Care Unit | ||||||
| The Intensive Care Unit (often referred to as ICU) is on level 6 and has 6 beds. This ward is for patients requiring intensive nursing care and is staffed on a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of nurses to patients. A doctor is present 24 hours a day. If you become very ill during your stay at Peter Mac, you may be moved into the ICU to receive more intensive care. Like Ward 2, ICU has strict infection control policies. All visitors must wash their hands with the solution provided before entering. No flowers or plants are allowed into ICU. For more information on the Intensive Care Unit click here >> |
