| For many patients and visitors, entering a hospital can be an emotional and frightening experience. At Peter Mac, a more welcoming environment has been created by the display of vibrant contemporary art throughout the hospital and its satellite centres. The works of art create visual interest, provide diversion, stimulate conversation, can assist in overcoming a patient’s feeling of anxiety and overall, generate a sense of life and optimism. Everyone attending an appointment, receiving treatment, walking down a corridor or simply waiting for a lift, will come face to face with a painting, original print, drawing, photograph or sculpture by many of Australia’s best contemporary artists. As many patients visit Peter Mac for several weeks or attend regularly for treatment for many months on end, the quality of the hospital’s environment is vitally important. The Peter Mac Art Collection, established in 1998, has grown solely through generous donations of art work by artists, collectors, companies, galleries and interested individuals wishing to make a difference. Most of these donations have been made through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program, which offers donors a tax deduction for the market value of their gift. The Voluntary Peter Mac Art Collection Committee raises the necessary funds required to cover all costs associated with the arts program in the hospital including installation equipment, framing, freight and curatorial services, by organising a number of functions each year. | ||||

| The Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program established by the Federal Government’s Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, encourages gifts of significant cultural items from private collectors to enhance the collections of public galleries, museums, libraries and archives. Peter Mac is a recognised participant in this program and many generous donors have gifted works to the collection under this scheme. All proposed donations must be discussed initially with the Curator to ascertain suitability and then approved by the Acquisitions Sub Committee. If you are interested in donating an art work to the collection, please contact the Curator, Svetlana Karovich on 03 9656 1920. |
