What we do
Good nutrition plays an important role in patients undergoing cancer treatment. Our department focuses on assessing patients' nutritional needs before, during and after treatment, and providing support and advice during these times. For many people with cancer, the side effects they experience can greatly affect their ability and desire to eat. The role of a Dietitian is to work with these patients to understand their nutritional needs, develop strategies to reduce diet related side effects and enhance their quality of life. It is often a matter of changing dietary priorities to combat side effects of cancer treatment in order to optimise nutrition.

We strive for excellence ensuring that our clinical practice is evidence based and we play an important role in educating others by disseminating our experience. We are involved in the education and training of Dietetics students, as well working in conjunction with the Dietitians Association of Australia to support continuing professional development of Dietitians outside of Peter Mac on nutritional management in Oncology. We prioritise maintaining and improving the quality of our services and play a significant role in clinical research.

Nutrition for Peter Mac Patients
Each of our Dietitians has areas of specialty defined by types of cancers including Head & Neck, Upper & Lower Gastrointestinal, Skin, Haematology, Lung, Sarcoma, Urology, Gynaecology and Breast cancers.

Patients are seen both as outpatients and inpatients at East Melbourne; and we also operate outpatient clinics at other sites including Peter Mac Moorabbin and Peter Mac Box Hill. In addition to this, one of our key roles is managing patients that require nutrition support via feeding tubes whilst living at home. We are responsible for overseeing the nutrition care of these patients and closely monitoring their progress.

Food Services
As well as clinical Dietitians, we have a Food Service Dietitian who works to ensure the food that patients receive in hospital is suited to their individual nutrition requirements. For many years the Nutrition Department has organised a variety of ‘Guest Chef’ functions at Peter Mac. The aim of these functions is to increase the pleasure of food for patients and “help put the fun back into eating”, such as Christmas afternoon teas supplied by the Park Hyatt.
